Abstract
that computers have become sophisticated learning tools is no news to most people. The time is past when many of us could not imagine that computers would be more than number crunchers, analyzing scientific and financial data. The proliferation of inexpensive, portable home computers with their imaginative video games, the displacement of pinball machines by computerized action games complete with moving color graphics and sound, and the construction of automobiles by industrial robots have, along with other things, convinced us that computers and computer-related technology have become a way of life. Because computers seem so capable of interacting with people, it has not been difficult to imagine that computers also could become human-like teachers.
