Abstract

Prior work has shown that thermal processing by laser irradiation may be used to form components into relatively complex shapes at relatively high production rates and without the necessity of ancillary tooling. However, the most effective means of obtaining predefined shapes by laser assisted forming requires a combination of adaptive sensing and control technology that incorporates the use of a knowledge-base. To accomplish this, an automated system for laser assisted forming of shipyard components has been proposed. The system would utilize predictive and adaptive processing capabilities to achieve the desired shape. The proposed laser assisted forming system would include a laser and robotic system, a controller having an imbedded heuristic-based system, and laser sensors. The forming system would be capable of accepting and utilizing data generated during design of components. The design data would be used to provide the predefined shape necessary for comparison to measured data obtained during the forming progression.
