Abstract

This paper outlines the work performed to date in our unit on precision bone fragment positioning during craniofacial surgical procedures. The effort began with the development of computer-aided precision planning of such procedures. Optimization of landmark positions on mobile fragments was performed to best fit a normal form in first two-dimensional then threedimensional models. Work is in progress to extend such optimizations to 3D CT based surface models. Execution of these precision plans was first performed using intraoperative caliper measurement of landmark movements. Intermediate occlusal splints are our current standard positioning device. Work in progress involves automated vision systems and a passive robot for such purposes.
