Abstract

Tunnels are critical infrastructure components that require regular inspection and maintenance for safe operation. The traditional methods of tunnel inspection and maintenance are often time-consuming, costly, and pose significant risks to human workers. Recent advances in robotics technology have opened new possibilities for tunnel inspection and maintenance, offering a safer and more efficient alternative. The objective of this chapter is to present a comprehensive overview of robotics technology in tunnel inspection and maintenance. It covers various types of robots used in these operations, such as ground and aerial robots, as well as the sensing and control technologies enabling them to navigate and inspect tunnels. Additionally, the chapter discusses the potential advantages of using robots, such as improved accuracy, remote access, and reduced downtime, while also addressing the associated challenges and limitations. Future research directions are explored, and suggestions to overcome current technological limitations are proposed.
