Abstract

The chapter analyzes dark factories and lights-out manufacturing systems' impact on industrial production. It examines technological foundations: next-gen robotics, AI, IoT, and digital twins. Case studies across automotive, electronics, food processing, and pharmaceutical sectors demonstrate practical implementation benefits. The analysis explores the advantages of dark factories (24/7 production, reduced human error, enhanced energy efficiency) and challenges (workforce displacement, cybersecurity risks). Strategic implementation frameworks are provided, covering gradual transition approaches, hybrid models, and workforce development programs. Research reveals that while dark factories can significantly improve manufacturing efficiency, successful implementation requires balancing technical, economic, and social factors. The work advances understanding of advanced manufacturing systems and guides organizations transitioning to lights-out manufacturing.
