Abstract

Welcome to Roppongi Hills for MobiHoc 2004, The 5th ACM International Symposium on Mobile Ad Hoc Networking and Computing. The 5th Annual Symposium marks the first time for MobiHoc to be held in Asia and provides a wonderful opportunity to encourage heightened activity and interest in this field in the Asian region.The response to this years' call for papers demonstrates the growing momentum in this field. 275 submissions (a 41% increase over 2003) provided the Program Committee with the difficult job of selecting the 24 papers that make up the two-day technical sessions. In addition to the technical presentations, the Program Committee has also provided us with an interesting selection of tutorials and posters.Technical session themes include physical layer, network layer and middle layer presentations outlining the wide scope of the MANET area. Tutorials range from power control, topology control and architecture to an introductory level course conducted in Japanese.With this three day content as a base, there are great expectations for MobiHoc 2004 as a starting point for a collaboration between Japan's industry and academia toward the release of ad-hoc network products and the birth of a new form of networking. I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to host this meeting in Asia on this occasion.Having said that, it is with great pleasure that I introduce you to our keynote speaker Toshi Doi, Chairman of Sony Computer Science Labs. Mr. Doi is chiefly responsible for the development of Sony's AIBO and SDR-4X robots. AIBO is a primary example of Japan's robot technology. I look forward to Mr. Doi's perspectives on robot technology and robot networking as a look into the possibilities for robot networking as a MANET application.
