Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) is a synthetic, colorless, odorless gas composed of one sulfur atom bonded to six fluorine atoms, known for its exceptional electrical insulating and arc-quenching properties. In electrical engineering and robotics infrastructure, SF₆ is widely used within gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), high-voltage substations, and DC transmission systems, where it prevents electrical arcing and enables compact, high-capacity power distribution equipment. Its superior dielectric strength — approximately five times that of air — makes it invaluable for safely managing high-voltage environments, including the extra-high-voltage (750 kV) substations that power large-scale robotic and industrial facilities. However, SF₆ presents significant concerns: it is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential roughly 23,500 times that of CO₂, and surface charging effects on internal spacers under DC stress can compromise long-term insulation reliability. Understanding and mitigating these occupational and environmental risks is critical as engineers design safer, more sustainable power infrastructure to support modern AI and robotics deployments.
