Selection in genetic algorithms (GAs) is the process by which candidate solutions are chosen from a population to reproduce and pass their genetic material to the next generation, mimicking natural Darwinian survival of the fittest. Common selection strategies include tournament selection, roulette-wheel (fitness-proportionate) selection, and rank-based selection, each balancing exploration of new solutions against exploitation of high-performing ones. In robotics and AI, selection drives optimization across diverse problems — tuning robot controller parameters, evolving locomotion gaits, optimizing grasp configurations for multi-fingered hands, and shaping emergent collective behaviors in swarm systems. It is also central to co-evolutionary approaches where robots develop communication or social strategies through iterative competitive pressure. Selection matters because it directly governs convergence speed and solution diversity: overly aggressive selection causes premature convergence to suboptimal solutions, while weak selection slows progress. Properly designed selection mechanisms allow robotic systems to efficiently navigate complex, high-dimensional search spaces, making GAs practical tools for real-world engineering design and autonomous behavioral adaptation.
