A hemostatic agent is a substance or material used to stop or control bleeding by promoting blood clotting and tissue sealing at a wound or surgical site. These agents come in various forms — including topical powders, sprays, fibrin sealants, and adhesives — and work by accelerating the body's natural coagulation cascade or physically occluding blood vessels. In robotics and minimally invasive surgery, hemostatic agents play a critical supporting role by enabling surgeons to manage bleeding in confined, hard-to-reach spaces where traditional suturing or cauterization may be limited. They are widely applied in robot-assisted procedures such as partial nephrectomy, radical prostatectomy, hysterectomy, and hernia repair, sometimes allowing surgeons to operate without vascular clamping and thereby reducing ischemic risk to surrounding tissue. Their importance lies in improving surgical safety, reducing blood loss, shortening operating times, and minimizing post-operative complications. As robotic surgery expands into more complex and delicate procedures, hemostatic agents serve as essential adjuncts that complement precision instrumentation, ultimately improving patient outcomes and enabling procedures that might otherwise carry unacceptable hemorrhagic risk.
