A classifier is a machine learning model or algorithm that assigns input data to one of several predefined categories based on learned patterns. In robotics and AI, classifiers process diverse inputs — including images, sensor readings, electromyographic signals, EEG data, and point clouds — to enable systems to make categorical decisions. Applications span a wide range: recognizing human gestures for robot teleoperation, detecting cracks in infrastructure, segmenting actions in video, identifying objects for grasping, and decoding neural signals in brain-computer interfaces. Classifiers may take many forms, including convolutional neural networks, support vector machines, fuzzy rule-based systems, and learning classifier systems, each suited to different data types and constraints. They can operate in real time, adapt to streaming data, or leverage transfer learning when training examples are scarce. Classifiers are foundational to robotics and AI because they transform raw, high-dimensional sensor data into meaningful semantic labels, enabling autonomous agents to perceive, interpret, and respond intelligently to their environments.
