Sudharshan Venkatesan is an astronomical instrumentation specialist whose work is reshaping our understanding of nearby galaxies through integral field spectroscopy (IFS). His primary research focus is the development and deployment of advanced multi-object spectrographs, particularly the Hector instrument for the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). Venkatesan’s major contribution is his central role in designing, building, and commissioning Hector—a modular IFS instrument that dramatically expands the capacity for large-scale galaxy surveys. Building on the success of the SAMI instrument, Hector employs high fill-factor imaging fibre bundles called "hexabundles" to simultaneously capture spectra from hundreds of galaxies.
