About

Ralph P. Tufano is a pioneering thyroid and parathyroid surgeon whose work has fundamentally reshaped minimally invasive approaches to endocrine surgery. Best known for his groundbreaking contributions to remote-access and transoral thyroidectomy, Tufano has dedicated his career to developing surgical techniques that eliminate visible neck scarring while maintaining oncologic integrity and patient safety. His 2010 cadaveric feasibility study on transoral robotic-assisted thyroidectomy (117 citations) laid the conceptual groundwork for an entirely new surgical corridor, which he subsequently refined to incorporate central neck dissection and management of papillary thyroid carcinoma. His 2013 meta-analysis on robotic thyroidectomy safety (166 citations) provided critical evidence to guide adoption of these novel techniques in Western practice. Among his most cited works, a 2017 North American series on transoral thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy (170 citations) established the real-world feasibility of these approaches beyond Asia, where they had been predominantly practiced. Tufano's multi-institutional collaborations and comparative outcome studies have collectively amassed nearly 1,200 citations across his top papers alone, cementing his reputation as a leading authority in advancing scarless, patient-centered thyroid surgery.
