Pierluigi Nicotera is a leading neuroscientist whose research primarily focuses on neurodegeneration, neuronal cell death mechanisms, and the molecular pathways underlying brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and stroke. His major contributions include pioneering work on the role of calcium signaling, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction in neuronal apoptosis and excitotoxicity—key processes that drive progressive neuronal loss.
