About
P. R. McCullough is a pioneering observational astronomer whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the interstellar medium and star formation through wide-field imaging. His primary research focus is the development and execution of large-scale, robotic surveys of ionized hydrogen (Hα) emission across the southern sky. McCullough’s most significant contribution is the creation of the Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas (SHASSA), a monumental project that produced the first comprehensive, high-resolution map of Hα emission for the entire southern celestial hemisphere. This survey, detailed in his highly cited 2001 paper (452 citations), utilized a robotic CCD camera at CTIO to capture 283 fields, each covering 13 square degrees at arcminute resolution. The SHASSA atlas has become an indispensable resource for astronomers studying everything from supernova remnants and planetary nebulae to the diffuse ionized gas in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds, including his earlier work on the LMC (1999). By making this vast dataset publicly available, McCullough enabled countless subsequent discoveries, cementing his legacy as a key architect of modern, survey-driven astrophysics.
