About

Mikhail Sofiev is a leading figure in atmospheric composition research, specializing in the modeling and prediction of aerosols, air quality, and emissions from natural and anthropogenic sources. His work is central to understanding how wildfires and other combustion sources impact the global climate and human health. Sofiev is a key contributor to the International Cooperative for Aerosol Prediction (ICAP), where his influential 2019 paper (153 citations) advanced the global operational aerosol multi-model ensemble, integrating nine models to improve forecasting accuracy. He also leads the development of the SILAM (System for Integrated modelling of Atmospheric composition) model, a cornerstone for European and global air quality assessments. His recent 2024 study on fire activity over the PEEX domain (Pan-Eurasian Experiment) synthesizes two decades of satellite data, models, and ground measurements to link meteorological conditions with fire emissions and climate feedbacks. With a career spanning over two decades, Sofiev’s contributions are instrumental in bridging observational data and predictive modeling, making him a vital resource for students and researchers tackling the complexities of aerosol-climate interactions and environmental policy.
