L. Marinangeli is a leading figure in astrobiology and planetary exploration, specializing in the detection of biosignatures and the development of in situ analytical instrumentation for Mars analog environments. Her research focuses on bridging the gap between terrestrial field studies and robotic space missions, with a particular emphasis on morphological biosignatures—physical features indicative of past or present life. In her landmark 2008 study (60 citations), Marinangeli conducted the first integrated laboratory investigation demonstrating how a suite of viable planetary instruments could identify such biosignatures in Martian analog specimens, directly informing future rover and lander operations. She also played a key role in the Life in the Atacama (LITA) project, where she co-developed the Data Scoring System (DSS), a novel tool for assessing habitability and guiding robotic life-detection efforts in Earth’s driest desert (2007, 17 citations).
