K. Harshman is a space physicist whose research bridges high-energy astrophysics and planetary radiation environments. Early in their career, Harshman contributed to the discovery and characterization of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), notably co-authoring the 2003 study on GRB 020405, which identified its late red bump afterglow using the Interplanetary Network and ground-based robotic telescopes. This work, cited nearly 100 times, helped refine models of long-duration GRB progenitors and their afterglow emission. More recently, Harshman has focused on the Martian radiation environment, leading a 2023 study that unfolded the neutron flux spectrum on the surface of Mars by combining data from the MSL-RAD instrument on the Curiosity rover and the Odyssey-HEND spectrometer. This research is critical for assessing radiation exposure risks for future crewed missions and understanding the secondary particle cascade induced by galactic cosmic rays at the Martian surface. Harshman’s work demonstrates a unique ability to analyze complex datasets from multiple space missions, advancing both our understanding of transient cosmic explosions and the practical challenges of deep-space exploration.
