About

K. D. Retherford is a leading planetary scientist whose research spans lunar volatile dynamics, astrobiology, and the exploration of planetary caves. A central figure in the Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Retherford has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the Moon’s polar cold traps. Their 2023 study, “LRO‐LAMP Lunar South Pole Cold Traps,” leveraged seven years of ultraviolet observations to assess reserves of water ice, carbon dioxide, and ammonia, providing critical constraints on volatile resources for future exploration.
