About
H. Flewelling is an astrophysicist renowned for pioneering work on the early optical afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Their key research focuses on the rapid, multi-wavelength observation of these cataclysmic explosions, particularly using the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE-III) telescope network. Flewelling’s major contribution includes leading a comprehensive study of 12 early GRB afterglows from 2005–2007, which provided critical insights into the “fireball” phase immediately following a burst. This work, published in 2009 and garnering over 110 citations, demonstrated the power of automated optical telescopes in capturing fleeting afterglow light curves, enabling comparisons with X-ray data from the Swift satellite. Additionally, Flewelling derived the optical luminosity function of GRBs from a uniform sample of 58 events, a foundational achievement for understanding the population’s energy distribution.
