About

Dr. Giampaolo Siena is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of robotic kidney surgery. His primary research focuses on robot-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT) and the oncologic safety of robotic tumor enucleation for renal cell carcinoma. Dr. Siena’s major contributions include leading the European experience with RAKT, demonstrating its feasibility and excellent functional outcomes in landmark studies with over 200 combined citations. He also developed and validated the endoscopic robot-assisted simple enucleation (ERASE) technique, providing critical long-term oncologic data that supports tumor enucleation as a safe, nephron-sparing option even for highly complex renal masses. His work has been instrumental in establishing best practices for managing synchronous bilateral renal masses and in innovating reconstructive techniques, such as the Florence robotic intracorporeal neobladder (FloRIN), developed following rigorous IDEAL guidelines. With several papers exceeding 50 citations and a sustained focus on high-impact clinical outcomes, Dr. Siena is a leading voice in robotic urology, shaping how surgeons worldwide approach kidney transplantation and nephron-sparing surgery.
