About

Geoff Daniels is a leading figure in transfusion medicine and immunohematology, best known for his pioneering work in non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for fetal blood group genotyping. His research focuses on the clinical application of cell-free fetal DNA (ccffDNA) analysis from maternal plasma to prevent hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). Daniels’ most impactful contribution is the development and validation of high-throughput, automated robotic techniques for fetal *RHD* genotyping. His landmark 2008 prospective feasibility study (231 citations) demonstrated that this approach could accurately predict fetal RhD phenotype, enabling targeted use of anti-RhD immunoglobulin only for women carrying RhD-positive fetuses. This work has profound implications for clinical practice, potentially eliminating unnecessary prophylactic treatment in up to 40% of RhD-negative pregnancies. He further extended this methodology to early gestation (11–13 weeks) in a 2011 study (53 citations), showing feasibility in the first trimester. By providing a safe, non-invasive alternative to amniocentesis, Daniels’ research has paved the way for routine mass antenatal screening, reducing both medical costs and patient anxiety while improving outcomes for at-risk pregnancies.
