About
G. G. Didebulidze is a leading atmospheric physicist whose research centers on aerosol–cloud interactions, dust transport dynamics, and the optical properties of the atmosphere over the Caucasus region. His most cited work, a 2012 study combining ground-based lidar, satellite data, and sun photometric measurements, provided a comprehensive analysis of a severe dust event over Abastumani, Georgia, in May 2009. This investigation revealed exceptionally high aerosol optical depth (AOD) values of 0.45–0.57 at 500 nm—recorded at the nearest AERONET site—and demonstrated how long-range dust transport from arid source regions can profoundly alter local atmospheric composition. By integrating multiple observational platforms with simulation models, Didebulidze’s research has significantly advanced the understanding of aerosol loading and its climatic and environmental impacts in a region where such data were previously scarce. With 16 citations, this paper remains a key reference for studies of extreme dust episodes in the South Caucasus.
