David Benyon is a leading researcher in human-computer interaction, with a particular focus on designing technologies that enhance the lives of older adults. His work centers on the development of personification technologies and robot companions, exploring how artificial systems can provide meaningful social and emotional support. In his highly influential 2004 paper, "Personification technologies: developing artificial companions for older people," Benyon reported on the UTOPIA project, a consortium of four Scottish universities that investigated the critical role of companionship in the emotional and physical well-being of older individuals.
