Curt Schurgers is a pioneer in underwater sensing and autonomous robotic systems, with a focus on submesoscale ocean dynamics—the complex, small-scale motions that drive ocean mixing and climate. His most influential work introduces the Mini-Autonomous Underwater Explorer (M-AUE), a swarm of miniature, drift-capable robots that measure three-dimensional ocean flows at scales below 1–10 km, a regime previously inaccessible to conventional instruments.
