About
Constantini Samara is a leading environmental chemist whose research focuses on the source apportionment and chemical characterization of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), with a particular emphasis on urban and industrial pollution in Greece. Her work has been instrumental in understanding how economic crises, such as the increased biomass burning in Thessaloniki during Greece’s financial downturn, alter the redox activity and toxicity of quasi-ultrafine particles—a key contribution cited 61 times. Samara has developed and refined hybrid source-receptor models, including a robotic chemical mass balance approach, to trace the origins of PM10 and PM2.5 across major Greek cities and industrial zones, such as lignite mining and power generation areas in Western Macedonia and Rhodes.
