A fluid parcel is a conceptually small, finite volume of fluid that moves together as a coherent unit, carrying properties such as velocity, pressure, temperature, and density along its path. In fluid dynamics, treating fluid as a collection of these discrete parcels allows engineers and researchers to mathematically track how physical quantities evolve both in space and over time. In robotics and AI, fluid parcels are foundational to simulating environments where robots interact with liquids or gases — such as underwater vehicles, soft robots operating in flow, or bio-inspired swimmers like robotic fish. Methods such as Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulations blend two complementary perspectives: following fluid parcels as they move (Lagrangian) while also observing flow through fixed spatial points (Eulerian). This hybrid approach is especially valuable for modeling complex fluid-structure interactions, where a robot's body deforms or moves through surrounding fluid. Understanding fluid parcel behavior enables more accurate hydrodynamic simulations, ultimately improving the design, control, and energy efficiency of robots operating in fluidic environments.
