Abstract

The concept of the CORDIC algorithm was established by Jack Volder in 1959 (1). In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in this algorithm due to the plethora of computationally-intensive applications that have come from various scientific and engineering fields such as robotics, signal processing, and engineering graphics. Many advances have been made in the research and the application of the CORDIC algorithm, both in software and hardware implementations. Very little discussion has appeared in the literature dealing with systems of high-speed CORDIC hardware units, though. The work presented in this thesis addresses such systems and certain issues, like norm-correction and error propagation, that are particular to these systems. Circuit design issues, such as chip floorplanning and interfacing, are discussed. Also, the design and simulation of a CORDIC prototype chip is described.
