Abstract
Genetic programming(GP) is an automatic method for creating a computer programming or other complex structure solve a problem. It has been applied successfully to a large number of difficult problems like automatic design, pattern recognition, robotic control, synthesis on neural architectures, symbolic regression, music and picture generation. In this paper, the basic algorithms, their theory and many improvement methods are described. Some important techniques about GP are discussed, and some typical GP systems and their main applications are also introduced. Also some new devleopment trends concerning genetic programming are proposed.
