Experiments with the Model Test Apparatus Installed in the AFIT Low Speed Tunnel

Abstract
A Model Test Apparatus (MTA) to support and control wind tunnel models was developed and installed at the Air Force Institute of Technology’s low speed wind tunnel. The MTA is a 6-actuator robotic manipulator arm which was shown to be capable of dynamic motions. Maximum accelerations of 1G were performed in all three axes, as well as linear velocities in excess of 3 m/s. Maximum rotational rates of 2π rad/s were demonstrated. The MTA was installed so as to position and manipulate models through an access port on the side wall of the Air Force Institute of Technology low speed tunnel. This paper describes the initial development work to integrate the MTA with the tunnel, dictate model motion, and gather data from dynamically moving models. Initial aerodynamic studies were carried out for low reduced-frequency (k = 0.001 to 0.002) oscillatory-pitch motions for a rectangular wing with an aspect ratio of 2 and a NACA 0012 airfoil section. Dynamic pressure data indicated the abrupt stall, consistent with the literature on the subject.
