Abstract

Friction is a phenomenon that appears in all mechanical systems such as robotic systems and machine tools (in each interface between two surfaces in contact). It has a big influence on their performance and behavior. This phenomenon is related to energy dissipation as heat for instance and leads to wear in the contacting bodies’ area. Friction modeling is a delicate problem which poses several challenges to control mechanical systems. Several models can be used to describe this phenomenon. They can be subdivided with respect to their details in describing surface contact properties occurring on a microscopic and macroscopic level. It is well known that classical Coulomb dry friction model does not portray important physical phenomena occurring in the contact among mating surfaces. In the attempt of exploring alternatives to Coulomb friction model, this paper deals with the analysis and the simulation of a two degree of freedom oscillatory system with dry friction. Modeling of dry friction is based on Dahl approach. Two cases will be discussed: free and forced motion, comparison between Coulomb and Dahl models will be drawn back.
