Abstract
This paper describes the latest developments in the InfraROB project, a Horizon 2020 initiative funded by the European Commission (Grant Agreement N. 955337). The primary objective of InfraROB is to enhance the integrity, performance, and safety of road infrastructures by implementing autonomous robotized solutions and modularization. A pivotal task within this project involves developing a 3D printer system integrated into a small autonomous carrier designed to repair potholes in road pavements. The proposed system addresses the critical need for a preventative approach to infrastructure maintenance during the early stages of road degradation. By autonomously reaching pothole positions, the system minimizes worker exposure to traffic, enhancing overall safety. This approach aligns with the overarching goal of InfraROB to revolutionize road repair methods. The mixture allows immediate compaction by maintenance and traffic vehicles and ensures efficient and durable repairs. The development process is detailed across four distinct phases: defining constraints for the autonomous carrier, establishing parameters for the 3D printer system and repair mixture, designing and constructing the 3D printer, and finally, integrating the system with the autonomous carrier. This paper provides insights into the printer’s design tailored to the robot’s dimensions and successful integration into the autonomous carrier, marking a significant leap forward in autonomous road repair technology.
