Abstract
Presidential long-term direction for the U.S. Space Program includes the goal of landing humans on Mars. Criticism of this goal includes executive commitment, NASA technical capabilities, and economics. The author suggests landing humans or robots on Mars is possible only with international cooperation on technical and economic issues.
