Abstract
In this paper, the application of metaphors to virtual reality (VR) systems is proposed for the purpose of realizing harmony between humans and computer systems. Concepts of metaphors are defined more clearly, and classification and construction of metaphors in a human-oriented system are also proposed. Roles of the visual metaphor and those of the operative metaphor, as well as their composite effects, are discussed and confirmed using an example of robot teaching in a virtual environment.
