Abstract

Robotics and automation have revolutionized modern manufacturing, integral to Industry 4.0, enhancing design, production, and delivery through interconnected systems. Evolving from basic tasks in the 1960s to advanced, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven operations, robots now perform complex, precise, and flexible roles, marking a shift from manual to smart manufacturing. Key technologies include articulated robots for welding, Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm robots for precise tasks, Delta robots for packaging, and collaborative robots (cobots) for human–robot teamwork. Automation tools like programmable logic controllers, machine vision systems, and automated guided vehicles optimize processes, while AI integration enhances capabilities through adaptive learning and real-time decision-making, improving efficiency and quality. Industries such as automotive and food have seen significant benefits, with robots enhancing production speed, accuracy, and consistency, and reducing waste. General manufacturing also gains from automation in material handling and assembly. Despite challenges like high costs, maintenance, interoperability issues, and cybersecurity concerns, careful planning and collaboration can mitigate these. Future trends include advanced AI and machine learning, improving robots’ adaptability and decision-making, and enhanced human–robot collaboration through better sensors and AI. Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems will enable real-time monitoring and predictive analytics, fostering smart factories. Robotics and automation will also promote sustainable practices by improving resource efficiency and reducing waste and energy consumption. As demand for skilled workers in robotics and AI grows, investment in training programs is essential, ensuring these technologies continue to transform manufacturing, providing competitive advantages and driving innovation.
