Opening the Doors to Advanced Materials in 2022

Abstract
Welcome to the 34th volume of Advanced Materials and the first issue of 2022. We're happy to be looking back at a successful year for the journal. Thanks to our authors and reviewers who help us to ensure that only the highest-quality research is submitted to and ultimately published in the journal, the Impact Factor of Advanced Materials has kept on increasing to 30.849 (2021 Journal Citation Reports, Clarivate Analytics), surpassing 30 for the first time. Advanced Materials thereby remains among the top journals across six subject categories in Web of Science, including multidisciplinary materials science (#9/383), nanoscience & technology (#3/127), applied physics (#5/171), and multidisciplinary chemistry (#5/219). Furthermore, in the latest Google Scholar ranking of top publications, Advanced Materials is listed again as the #6 journal globally, with an h5-index of 294. The highest-cited articles published in 2018 or 2019 that thus have contributed most to these results are included in Table 1. We congratulate these authors on their great success. While energy-related topics such as solar cells, batteries, and catalysis keep on attracting significant interest from our readership, we have also seen a steady growth in manuscripts covering biomedical, electronics, and photonics applications, as well more fundamental research into materials physics/engineering/chemistry. Altogether, in 2021 Advanced Materials received, for the first time, more than 10 000 submissions. Out of the articles that made it to publication, Table 2 highlights those that received the most public attention on social media and in various news outlets, as indicated by their Altmetric Score. Well done to these authors! In reflection of the rapid growth of the journal, four new Deputy Editors have been appointed to Advanced Materials this year: James Cook (Weinheim, Germany; post-acceptance role), Babak Mostaghaci (Weinheim), Ekaterina Perets (Berlin, Germany), and Lu Shi (Shanghai, China). Together with Jos Lenders (Editor-in-Chief; Weinheim), Duoduo Liang (Deputy Editor; Beijing, China), and Esther Levy (Consulting Editor; Sydney, Australia), the renewed leadership team of Advanced Materials is very much looking forward to continuing to work together with you. Last year, we published six special issues, both targeted on hot topics that are central to the aims and scope of the journal or with top research institutions around the world (see Table 3 and Figure 1). We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our guest editors for their enthusiasm and support, without which such projects would not be possible. For 2022/2023, we are working on several special issues focusing on topics of current interest, including organic semiconductors, 2D materials in integrated circuits, quantum materials, photonic nanomaterials, and neuromorphic engineering. To celebrate the anniversaries of excellent research institutes and their successes, also this year we are working with several universities to highlight their scientific achievements; in addition other special issues are in the works to highlight regional successes and partnerships. In 2021 it was ten years since Prof. Yury Gogotsi (Drexel University, USA) and co-workers published their seminal first report on the discovery of MXenes in Advanced Materials.
