Abstract
Abstract Robotics, a recently popularized phrase, has captured the interest of the general public as well as the drilling industry. This paper reviews the history of robotic applications in drilling and their outcome for the purpose of determining future trends. An analysis of the obstacles and limitations common to all industries is used to adjust the trend projection, and a survey of current efforts and programs is presented to complete the presentation. Applications analyzed include the automatic drilling rig, various pipe-racking systems, and recent offerings in pipe-handling machines.
