Abstract
The authors report on results drawn from simulations and experiments using prototypes, in which they sought the best configuration for maximising the utilisation of both reluctance torque and magnetic torque in a multilayer interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPM motor). It was found that the best motor configuration had two layers of permanent magnets embedded in the radial direction of the rotor. It was also learned what sort of effect that the way in which the permanent magnets were arranged had on output characteristics, cogging torque and efficiency. It was found that a double-layer IPM motor with notched magnet ends is best indicated for industrial machinery, robots, air-conditioner compressors and ecology vehicles which require high torque and a wide constant power region.
