摘要

Despite the ongoing development of cutting-edge tools and machinery, the construction industry is labor-intensive and physically exhausting. This puts workers at constant risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders leading to workers’ attrition and reduced productivity. Wearable robots, such as exoskeletons, have garnered some attention as potential tools to increase the health, safety, and productivity of construction workers. Exoskeletons can support or enhance a user’s physical activity or capacity thereby reducing the physical strain and exertion that construction workers endure. Construction researchers have begun investigating the use of exoskeletons for construction operations. To facilitate further research on the use of exoskeletons in the construction industry, the objective of this book chapter is to provide an overview of the current studies on exoskeleton usage in construction and summarize gaps to be addressed in the future. A systematic literature review was conducted to 1) Identify different types of exoskeletons; 2) Examine current research efforts in the construction industry and other industry sectors and 3) Reveal research gaps to assist construction researchers regarding future works to facilitate the adoption of exoskeletons in the construction industry.
