Current and future applications of robotic gynecologic surgery

Robotic gynecologic surgery is the natural evolution in technology to facilitate minimally invasive access surgery. This technology has the potential to expand the scope of complex procedures performed by laparoscopy. The main advantages of the approach are the 3D image that give the gynecologist depth perception and the ability to have movement at the instrument tip that resembles the human wrist. However, there are no randomized clinical trials that validate this technology. This article will give an overview of the instrumentation available and evaluate the case series that provide insight into the future potential of this emerging field of robotics.
