摘要

The main thrust of the topic I would like to discuss will revolve around two issues. The rst is methodological, the second theoretical. Initially I would like to raise the question as to why we should develop theoretical models and what form they should take. Specically, I believe the main use of such modelling is to aid medical research. To what extent is it useful to model systems which explain brain function without taking into account medical disorders? For example, memory disorders are generally irreversible. Is it therefore of use to solely study how the hippocampus may contribute to memory ? I shall highlight how my work may provide a way forwards. Secondly, I would like to address a theoretical issue which arises from my own work. How do current hippocampal models address novelty detection (i.e. recognition memory) and are they correct? I shall briey present my work, discussing how novelty detection works within current models. Recent electrical recording techniques indicate...
