FPGA Implementation of High Performance and Energy Efficient Radix-4 based FFT

摘要

The Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) has wide application in digital signal processing (DSP). Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was born from the advancement of DFTs, which made the system considerably quicker. Over the decade demand for low-power and area, efficient hardware is increased drastically because of battery-powered devices. The highly compact and extremely power-efficient devices are required in communication systems, robotics, medical diagnosis, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), etc. The proposed design has been implemented in Spartan 6, Spartan 7 and Artix 7 FPGAs with operating frequencies of 43.972 MHz, 67.2 MHz, and 78.7 MHz, respectively. One of the suggested design consumes 152 mW of power, with 86 mW of dynamic power dissipation and 66 mW of static power. This design can reduce the number of needed LUTs by up to 36%.
