A systematic survey of facial expression recognition techniques

Facial expression recognition (FER) is an imperative part in the exploration of man-machine interface. Presently, it is applied in a wide variety of environments including robotics, mobile application, digital signs etc. Since faces can divulge the emotional sentiment of a person, automatic elucidation of facial expressions delivers a natural way to interact with computers. FER systems scrutinize facial images captured via computer vision to detect human expressions or interpret emotion thereby. In this paper, we first explain the process of FER which will further assist how a particular technique is modelled. Also an extensive survey of the latest techniques for FER has been presented comparing them based on their feature extraction technique, classification method and recognition rate.
