摘要
High technology is a proposed salva tion for much of the U.S. economy. Corporations are now firmly anchored in the manufacture of products that would have been considered electronic and bio logical marvels as little as five or 10 years ago. As microcomputers, biotechnology, and robotics become common and even essential to industry, business, and the home, the need for individuals skilled in the uses of such technology is growing rapidly. In California, where high tech nology has already become a major part of the economy, it is estimated that nearly 40% of all new jobs in the 1980s will de pend on these industries. The Xerox Cor poration estimates that by 1990 some 90 million Americans will be linked to elec tronic work stations, and 36 million of them will need to know the fundamentals of programming. Amid the furor and clamor regarding this anticipated revolution, an important component is often overlooked.
