About

Perry J. Pickhardt is a leading figure in abdominal imaging and a pioneer in the use of CT for opportunistic osteoporosis screening. His work has fundamentally reshaped how radiologists and surgeons approach bone health, demonstrating that routine CT scans—including those performed for pre-surgical planning—can yield critical bone mineral density (BMD) data without additional radiation or cost. In a landmark 2023 study (23 citations), he showed that CT acquired for robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty can identify previously undiagnosed osteoporosis, directly guiding femoral fixation strategy and reducing perioperative fracture risk.
