Paul Hazelwood is a pioneering environmental chemist whose work has advanced the detection and analysis of persistent organic pollutants in aquatic systems. His primary research focuses on developing and refining analytical methodologies for trace-level determination of chlorinated compounds in water, with a particular emphasis on neutral chlorinated extractable organic compounds (NCECs). Hazelwood’s most notable contribution is his landmark 1994 study, “Determination of neutral chlorinated extractable organic compounds in water samples using large volume on‐column injection capillary gas chromatography–mass spectrometry,” which introduced an automated large volume on‐column injection (LOCI) technique. This method, combining solvent divert and heated retention gap technology with GC-MS, significantly improved the sensitivity and reliability of detecting sixteen key NCECs, setting a new standard for environmental monitoring. Although cited 12 times, this work is foundational for researchers studying chlorinated contaminants and has influenced subsequent protocols in water quality assessment.
