About
Patrick Jelinsky is a key architect of the robotic instrumentation powering the next generation of cosmological surveys. His primary research focus lies in the design and deployment of high-precision fiber-optic positioning systems for massive spectroscopic sky surveys, most notably the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Jelinsky’s major contribution is the development of the robotic multi-object focal plane system that enables DESI’s revolutionary capability: 5,020 independently controlled fiber positioners that automatically retarget celestial objects every 10–20 minutes with micron-level precision.
