About
N. Masetti is a leading astrophysicist specializing in the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their multi-wavelength afterglows. His research focuses on the rapid, robotic observation of these cosmic explosions, particularly in the optical and near-infrared (NIR) regimes, to probe the early universe and the physics of relativistic jets. Masetti’s major contributions include pioneering the use of fast-response robotic telescopes to capture the prompt afterglow of GRBs, as demonstrated in his highly cited 1999 work on GRB 990123 (112 citations), which provided critical constraints on the fireball model. He was instrumental in the development and scientific exploitation of the REM (Rapid Eye Mount) telescope, a groundbreaking robotic facility capable of simultaneous visible-NIR observations. His work on the REM telescope (81 citations) and its slitless spectrograph, ROSS, has enabled the detection of high-redshift bursts and the study of their immediate environments.
