About
João J. Ferreira is a leading researcher at the intersection of technological innovation and sustainable development. His primary research areas encompass Industry 4.0, digital transformation, and the environmental and social sustainability of multinational enterprises (MNEs). Ferreira’s most impactful contribution is his seminal 2023 paper on Industry 4.0 implementation in manufacturing MNEs, which has already garnered 148 citations. This work critically examines how digital technologies can transform traditionally resource-intensive manufacturing systems, offering a pathway to reduce environmental degradation and address social inequalities. By focusing on the unique scale and power of MNEs, Ferreira highlights their pivotal role in driving sustainable industrial change. Beyond his work on sustainability, Ferreira has also contributed to engineering education, co-designing a biologically inspired swimming robot (Bro-Fish) to teach mechanics and programming to young students. This project, though with fewer citations, demonstrates his commitment to fostering technological literacy. With a growing citation record and a focus on high-impact, real-world challenges, João J. Ferreira is a key voice in the global conversation on sustainable digitalization.
