J. W. Robertson is an observational astrophysicist whose research centers on cataclysmic variable stars—binary systems where a white dwarf accretes matter from a companion star. Robertson’s work has been pivotal in characterizing the behavior of these dynamic objects, particularly during their dramatic outburst cycles. In a foundational 1998 study, Robertson conducted a comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic analysis of SX Leonis Minoris, a newly identified SU Ursae Majoris-type dwarf nova. By capturing the system in both quiescence and superoutburst, Robertson revealed the double-peaked emission lines typical of these accreting binaries, providing key insights into their accretion disk structure. This work has garnered 22 citations and remains a reference for studies of dwarf nova outbursts. Robertson also led the multiyear photometric and spectroscopic investigation of PG 1000+667, identifying it as a VY Sculptoris star—a rare subclass of nova-like variables.
