HUGIN AUV
Ocean InfinityThe HUGIN AUV is a mature, commercially successful autonomous underwater vehicle developed by Kongsberg (in partnership with FFI) since the early 1990s, now in its 25th+ year on the market. It is a torpedo-shaped, untethered AUV rated to 6,000 m depth (Superior variant), capable of 48+ hours endurance at 4 knots, and equipped with a rich multi-sensor suite (multibeam sonar, side-scan sonar, DVL, IMU, LBL, GNSS, etc.). It performs its survey/inspection/mine-countermeasure tasks fully autonomously underwater without a human driving the task; operators plan missions and handle launch/recovery but do not teleoperate the vehicle during its underwater runs. The system has an extensive operational track record across commercial offshore surveying, military mine countermeasures, deep-sea mapping, and high-profile search operations (MH370, Roald Amundsen's plane). Some independent sources note commercial market utilization challenges (periods of idleness), but these are business/deployment issues rather than autonomy limitations.
